A fishing vessel rescued a 15-year-old boy who had been floating for several days clinging to an overturned small boat in the freezing Bering Sea off the coast of the US state of Alaska, the US Coast Guard announced.
After days of clinging to the boat, a fishing vessel reached the boy this week, after being contacted by the US Coast Guard.
According to rescuers, the boy's brother and cousin died sometime after the boat capsized, and their bodies were recovered after the boy was brought to safety near the remote St. Lawrence Island, an island closer to Russia than to the United States.
Dom White, captain of the fishing vessel "The Northwest Explorer," said the boy clung to the boat for nearly three days, adding in a statement to KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska: "This kid is extremely tough."
US Coast Guard planes and helicopters began searching for the boat on Monday morning after family members reported the three missing on Sunday night. Authorities have not released their names.
The US Coast Guard explained that members of the group left St. Lawrence Island last Friday and planned to return on Sunday morning. An air crew spotted the boy on Monday morning, dropping a life ring and supplies before contacting the fishing vessel that rescued him.
