Injury sidelines Qatari Barshim

An injury has prevented Qatari champion Mutaz Barshim from competing in the high jump final scheduled for Sunday at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, according to the Qatari channel "beIN Sports".

All eyes were on Barshim's participation due to the expectations placed on him to continue his achievements in the "Asiad" and add a new medal to his illustrious record.

Barshim holds three gold medals in the Asian Games, won in Guangzhou, China 2010, Incheon, South Korea 2014, missed the Jakarta 2018 edition due to injury, and then returned to win gold in Hangzhou, China 2022.

President of the Qatar Athletics Federation, Mohammed Al-Fadala, said: "Mutaz is a legend, and his absence from any competition is a loss for this tournament. Mutaz tried for two months to endure his injury and overcome it, and insisted on being present just before the tournament, but the injury persists, and we wish him a speedy recovery."

He added: "He tried until the last moment to participate, and he had hope of competing, but we assure him that he did his best, and we look forward to his return."

Barshim recorded the second-best mark in the history of the event (2.35m) at the previous Asian Games, and was looking forward in the current edition to continuing his presence on the podium and enhancing his historic record in the Asian Games.
